Lima Expresa carries out maintenance of 2km of the Rímac riverbed

03 December 2024
  • Prevention work includes the de-silting of more than 10,000 tons of sediment and clearing of vegetation in the Rimac riverbed.

  • With an investment of S/ 1.4 million, Lima Expresa protects its infrastructure, its customers and the community that lives around the river.

Lima Expresa, a subsidiary of VINCI Highways and concessionaire of Vía de Evitamiento and Vía Expresa Línea Amarilla, is carrying out the new cycle of maintenance and de-silting in Rímac river’s course. The works are taking place in the area of influence of the Lima Expresa Grand Tunnel and Balta and Santa Rosa bridges in Cercado de Lima. This project, that will be completed by November 2024, has the main goal of protecting the safety of the infrastructure, drivers and community by ensuring an adequate hydraulic section of the river.

The de-silting project had an investment of S/ 1.4 million and involves the elimination of sediments and vegetation, in addition to the repair of the protective rockfill in possible eroded areas and preventing possible obstructions. This year, the works include:

  • More than 5,000 square meters of clearing area are being intervened in three sections, from the Huánuco bridge to the Santa Rosa bridge.

  • More than 10,000 tons of material from the river to be cleared and rearranged.

  • More than 5,600 tons of river material to be removed.

  • Inspection, maintenance and repair of the rockfill along the river that may have been affected by erosion.

It should be noted that every year the Lima Expresa de-silting project begins with great anticipation, since January of this year the evaluation of past interventions, field inspections, permit management with the National Water Authority (ANA) and other planning details were carried out. In September 2024, Lima Expresa began the de-silting of the river and will be completed in November.

With these works, Lima Expresa continues the efforts of previous years to improve the conditions of the Rimac riverbed and protect both the infrastructure and the nearby communities.

Lima Expresa, a subsidiary of VINCI Highways, is the concession operator of two expressways in Lima. The concession includes two sections: Vía de Evitamiento (a 16 km highway) and Vía Expresa Línea Amarilla (a 9km highway which includes 13 viaducts as well as a tunnel of nearly 2 km under the Rimac River). The concession provides safe, congestion-free expressways to 180,000 vehicles every day at the heart of the dense urban environment of the Peruvian capital. Committed to reduce its carbon footprint in line with VINCI Concessions’ environmental ambition, Lima Expresa became in 2022 the first highway concession to reach carbon neutrality in South America.
