Lima Expresa wins a Creatividad Empresarial award for AI-powered innovation in road operations
- The first AI-driven highway incident detection system in Peru
- 95% of highway incidents detected in under five minutes, improving mobility in Lima
- Recognition of the innovation capacity of the VINCI Highways network
Lima Expresa, VINCI Highways’ subsidiary operating the Vía de Evitamiento and Vía Expresa Línea Amerilla expressways, has been recognized at the 2024 Creatividad Empresarial awards in the "Process Innovation" category. Organized by the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas, Creatividad Empresarial awards are one of the most prestigious in Peru, celebrating outstanding innovations that drive progress across industries.
The award recognizes Lima Expresa's deployment of Peru's first AI-integrated automatic incident detection system. The system processes data from more than 120 video cameras installed on the highways, enabling real-time detection of incidents. Its primary objectives are to identify high-risk situation faster and improve alerts and response times.
Since its launch in September 2023, the system has delivered tangible improvements:
· Increased efficiency in incident detection: average detection time reduced from 15 minutes to under five minutes for 95% of incidents.
· Improved road safety: a 14% decrease in road accidents was achieved in the first half of 2024 compared to 2023.
· Faster response times: response time was reduced by 2 minutes, from 11 minutes in 2023 to 9 minutes in 2024.
The UPC's Creatividad Empresarial 2024 highlights the system's significant impact in setting new standards in mobility and security, and its capacity to bring a transformative impact.
The innovation reflects VINCI Highways' commitment to enhancing mobility and safety through advanced technology. Lima Expresa serves as VINCI Highways’ Center of Excellence for Innovation in road operations, showcasing its ability to pilot innovations that benefit the entire network. A comparable AI-based system is also in operations in another highway operated by VINCI Highways in Slovakia (R1 Via Pribina).
Raúl Díaz, CEO of Lima Expresa, emphasized: "Operating the most urbanized and heavily trafficked expressways in Lima requires constant innovation. Thanks to VINCI Highways’ commitment, we are able to deploy the latest technologies that enhance mobility. Thanks to our AI-driven highway incident detection system, we are now more performant in our response to road incidents. This is another step in our objective to make Lima a more connected and efficient capital city”.
How does Lima Expresa's incident detection system work?
The system integrates data from several sources: over 120 highway cameras, navigation apps like Waze and Google Maps, traffic counting systems, and platforms such as Here and MapBox. Machine vision, machine learning, and AI fuse this data into actionable insights. Operators at the Lima Expresa
Operations Control Center use this information to respond quickly and effectively, coordinating assistance when needed.
